Airstrikes targeted multiple pro-Iranian militia positions in Syria overnight Sunday, resulting in at least 18 deaths, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition group based in London. The strikes hit military sites in central Syria, including a scientific research center in Hama province and other military installations. The Observatory reports that among the dead were four civilians, six unidentified individuals, and the rest were military personnel and militia members.
Syrian state media, however, offered a different account, claiming that only three people were killed, with 15 others injured. A military source stated that Syrian air defenses intercepted some of the incoming missiles, although several still reached their targets. According to the source, the strikes occurred in waves, with at least 15 missiles hitting various sites.
The Saudi television channel Al-Hadath reported that three rounds of strikes were carried out against five pro-Iranian militia sites. Some reports suggest that the strikes caused significant damage to a "scientific research center," along with other military positions.
This escalation is considered one of the most intense campaigns in recent years, with significant damage inflicted on Iranian-backed militia groups and Syrian military targets. The strikes come amidst Israel's ongoing efforts to weaken Iranian influence in the region, especially in Syria, where Iran and its proxy groups maintain a strong military presence.
Syrian air defenses reportedly responded to the strikes, but according to multiple sources, not all missiles were intercepted, and damage to key military infrastructure was substantial. This latest development further heightens tensions between Israel, Syria, and Iran, as the region faces continued instability and the potential for further escalations.
