Viral videos circulating on social media have highlighted a gathering in the village of Hader, situated on the Syrian side of the Golan Heights. In these videos, local dignitaries expressed their desire to join Israel, framing it as a safer choice compared to the threat posed by Islamist militias in the region.

One speaker declared, “In the name of all the people of Hader, and if anyone objects, please say… if we have to choose, we will choose the lesser evil – to be annexed to the (Israeli) Golan!” The statement underscored the fear that the alternative – the rise of radical militias – would endanger their families and homes.

The speaker emphasized that this sentiment represented not just Hader but also several surrounding villages. The crowd enthusiastically agreed, shouting, “We agree, we agree!”

This call comes amid increasing instability in Syria, where the regime's downfall and the growing influence of militias have heightened fears among local populations, especially the Druze communities of the Golan Heights. Experts suggest that these villages' loyalty to the Assad regime is wavering, with growing concerns about retaliation from those who oppose the regime's forces.

Dr. Yusri Khaizran, a researcher in Middle Eastern studies, noted that while the Druze in Israel have long been viewed as a stabilizing force, the Druze in Syria are now seeking autonomy and protection. He pointed out that Israel’s military presence has historically shielded these villages from Islamist militants, making the call to join Israel more prominent.
