An Egyptian security delegation is set to arrive in Israel on Thursday to kickstart discussions aimed at securing a Gaza ceasefire. This initiative follows a truce between Israel and Hezbollah, which has boosted hopes for a broader peace deal to end the war and release hostages held by Hamas. President Joe Biden has urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to prioritize the Gaza issue after the Lebanon ceasefire. Meanwhile, President-elect Donald Trump’s team is also being consulted to help push Israel toward an agreement.
Hamas has shown openness to a truce, signaling a possible shift in negotiations. The ceasefire plan includes phased hostages' release, with priority given to older and sick captives. The Rafah Border Crossing is expected to reopen under Palestinian Authority supervision, with Egyptian oversight. The US, Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey are all key players in these ongoing talks.
The ceasefire plan also aims to end the ongoing conflict, which began after Hamas's October 7 rampage, and includes efforts to secure the release of the remaining hostages, many of whom are still held in Gaza. Egypt's mediation efforts, particularly after Qatar’s withdrawal, are seen as crucial in securing a lasting peace agreement.
