In a moment of relief and joy, five Thai hostages who had been held captive in Gaza since October 7, 2023, were handed over to Israeli forces by the Red Cross. The release includes the return of Pongsak Thenna, Sathian Suwannakham, Watchara Sriaoun, Bannawat Seathao, and Surasak Lamnau. The Thai nationals had been working as agricultural laborers when they were kidnapped during the violence that erupted on October 7.
The Prime Minister’s Office confirmed the identities of the released hostages, offering a sense of closure to their families and the Thai community. In a bittersweet update, it was also confirmed that one other Thai citizen, Pinta Nattapong, remains alive and in captivity, while Sudthisak Rinthalak and Sonthaya Oakkharasri have tragically been declared dead, with their bodies still held by captors in Gaza.
The release of the five Thai nationals has been met with immense relief from both Israel and Thailand. Thai Ambassador to Israel Panba Chandraramiya expressed her deep gratitude, saying, "Today is one of the happiest days of my life for two reasons." She thanked the Israeli government for their efforts in preparing for the release and expressed hope for the safe return of the remaining Thai hostage still believed to be alive in Gaza.
Ambassador Chandraramiya also conveyed her country's appreciation for the collaboration between Israeli officials, the Red Cross, and others involved in ensuring the safe release of the hostages. He noted that while it was a significant day, Thailand continues to mourn the loss of the two Thai citizens whose lives were tragically cut short in captivity.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog warmly welcomed the safe return of the Thai nationals. "We are very moved and excited to see the Thai brothers coming out of the terrible situation," he said. Herzog expressed his hopes for the hostages' quick recovery and safe return to Thailand, emphasizing that this moment brought immense relief and joy to both Israel and Thailand.
