Republicans captured a majority in the U.S. Senate with wins in West Virginia and Ohio, ensuring at least one chamber under GOP control as Donald Trump returns to the White House. By Wednesday morning, the GOP had secured 51 Senate seats, a critical milestone that will enable Trump to advance his agenda, from tax cuts to immigration reform, with support from a Senate that can confirm conservative judges and key government appointments.

Republican victories in both chambers remain in flux as the House races continue. Early results show GOP progress, but with some states still counting votes, control of the House remains undecided. However, if Republicans maintain their current advantage, they could control both chambers of Congress, giving Trump a clear path to implement his policies.

Key Senate Victories

Republican wins in West Virginia and Ohio played pivotal roles in securing the Senate majority. In West Virginia, Republican Governor Jim Justice won an open Senate seat, replacing Joe Manchin, a former Democrat who had turned independent. Ohio saw Republican Bernie Moreno unseat three-term Democrat Sherrod Brown. Republicans also retained critical seats in Texas, where Ted Cruz was re-elected, and Nebraska, where Deb Fischer defeated independent Dan Osborn.

While Republicans have a clear Senate majority, achieving a 60-vote supermajority remains unlikely, which may restrict some legislative efforts. Still, their ability to influence judicial and executive appointments will be strengthened under Trump’s administration.

The House Remains Contested

In the House, Republicans are striving to maintain and potentially expand their 220-212 majority. Early wins in Pennsylvania and North Carolina, along with a Michigan seat, have bolstered GOP chances. Democrats gained a Republican-held seat in New York and one in Alabama, which was redrawn to create a Black majority district. However, Democrats now face an uphill battle, needing to flip at least seven seats to reclaim the House. Tight races in New York and California could be decisive, but final results may take several days due to lengthy ballot counts.

Global Reactions to Trump’s Win

Trump’s victory has prompted reactions worldwide. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer voiced optimism about continued collaboration, while European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reaffirmed the strong transatlantic partnership, calling the EU and U.S. “more than just allies.” French President Emmanuel Macron and Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof also expressed eagerness to strengthen ties with Trump.

Other leaders took a more nuanced stance. Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev suggested that Trump’s fiscal conservatism might affect U.S. support for Ukraine, although Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy congratulated Trump, praising his “peace through strength” philosophy as a potential pathway to a just peace in Ukraine.

A Path Forward with Republican Control

With a Republican-controlled Senate and potentially a Republican House, Trump’s presidency is poised to benefit from strong congressional backing. While Democratic gains and GOP internal dynamics may pose challenges, Republican leadership is preparing to advance policies on spending cuts, tax reforms, and immigration control. However, the narrow margins in both chambers mean party unity will be crucial to avoid deadlocks on key issues.
