A gunman was killed and three policemen wounded in an early morning shooting near the Israeli Embassy in Amman, Jordan, on Sunday. The incident, which unfolded in the Rabiah neighborhood, led to heightened security measures in the area, which is home to the heavily policed embassy.

According to state news agency Petra, the gunman opened fire at a police patrol before being shot by officers. Witnesses reported hearing gunshots, prompting swift action from both police and emergency services. Security forces cordoned off the area, urging residents to remain inside while authorities conducted an investigation into the attack.

Jordanian authorities have been on high alert in recent months, particularly in light of ongoing anti-Israel sentiment in the country. The Rabiah neighborhood has long been a hotspot for protests. In March, protests near the embassy led to violent clashes with riot police, who used tear gas to disperse demonstrators.

This latest incident comes amid tense relations between Jordan and Israel, which were further strained after a fatal shooting incident at the Israeli Embassy in 2017, which left two Jordanians dead. Although diplomatic ties between the two nations have been in place since 1994, relations remain fraught, and Israel’s security presence at the embassy has been a point of contention.

The Israeli ambassador, Rogel Rachman, has been in Israel since the outbreak of violence on October 7, citing security concerns. As investigations continue into Sunday’s shooting, Jordanian officials have yet to confirm the motives behind the attack. The situation remains under close scrutiny as authorities work to maintain control over a region that has seen growing tensions over the ongoing conflict.
