The Iranian-backed terrorist organization Hamas announced on Thursday that it is rejecting another proposal for a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip, blaming Israel for not agreeing to their demand that any cease-fire must be permanent. “The idea of a temporary pause in the war, only to resume aggression later, is something we have already expressed our position on. Hamas supports a permanent end to the war, not a temporary one,” senior Hamas official Taher al-Nunu told AFP.

The statement from Hamas comes after a round of talks were held on Monday in Doha, Qatar, between Mossad head David Barnea, CIA Director Bill Burns, and Qatar’s prime minister, which concluded on Monday.

Sources told the media that “US officials believe that if a short-term deal can be reached, it could lead to a more permanent agreement.”

However, al-Nunu has re-iterated the maximalist demands Hamas is making, including “a permanent ceasefire, withdrawal [of Israeli forces] from Gaza, the return of displaced people, sufficient humanitarian aid to Gaza and a serious prisoner exchange deal.”

It is estimated that at least 97 hostages who were kidnapped on October 7th, 2023 remain in Gaza, including 34 which the IDF has confirmed are no longer alive. This is in addition to two Israeli civilians Hamas has held for several years now and the remains of two IDF soldiers who were killed in 2014.
