The IDF announced on Sunday the elimination of Rafat Ibrahim Mahmud Akadih, a Nukhba terrorist who participated in the tragic attacks of October 7. Akadih infiltrated Kibbutz Nir Oz on that fateful day and served as the aide to the Nukhba commander of the Khan Yunis Brigade throughout the conflict. Guided by precise intelligence, the Israel Air Force conducted a targeted strike that neutralized Akadih, marking a pivotal moment in ongoing security efforts.
Throughout the IDF's operations continue to intensify on multiple fronts. Ground troops from the 162nd Division have been actively engaged in Gaza, reportedly eliminating dozens of hostile operatives in Jabalya in the northern region. In central and southern Gaza, forces have uncovered weapon caches and dismantled terror cells, further disrupting adversarial capabilities.
A notable discovery was made by soldiers from the 5th Brigade near Zeitoun over the weekend. They unearthed an underground tunnel embedded within civilian areas, concealing a Hamas weapons manufacturing facility. Operating under the direction of the 252nd Division, the troops found workshops and extensive supplies for producing rockets, shells, grenades, and diving equipment intended for maritime infiltrations. The tunnel complex included long-term living quarters equipped with ovens, stoves, food supplies, beds, and offices, indicating its use throughout the conflict.
Combat engineering units, in collaboration with the Yahalom Combat Engineering Unit and the Defense Ministry's Engineering and Construction Directorate, meticulously dismantled the tunnel. This action significantly impaired Hamas's ability to produce weapons, contributing to efforts to restore security and stability.
Amid these operations, the IDF mourns the loss of brave soldiers. An IDF soldier was tragically killed by a grenade explosion in the northern Gaza Strip between Friday and Saturday night. The military's Criminal Investigations Department is examining the circumstances, and the name of the fallen soldier has not yet been released.
This somber news follows the recent loss of Staff Sergeant Itay Parizat, 20, from Petah Tikva, and Staff Sergeant Yair Hananya, 22, from Mitzpe Netofa, both serving in the Shaked Battalion of the Givati Brigade. Another soldier from their unit was severely wounded and is receiving medical care.
On a hopeful note, Israel believes that the majority of the hostages detained in the Gaza Strip are alive. Out of the 101 hostages currently held, 51 are believed to be alive. While conclusive evidence remains forthcoming for others, the security establishment continues efforts to bring every captive home.
Negotiations to secure the release of hostages are reportedly underway in Doha, Qatar. Discussions involve a potential deal that could see a limited number of hostages released in exchange for a short-term ceasefire.
