Sirens wailed repeatedly in northern Israel on Saturday as over 130 rockets were launched from Lebanon, sending residents scurrying to shelters. Amid the barrage, ten drones targeted various locations across the country—six originating from Lebanon, three from Iraq, and one from an unknown source. The IDF managed to intercept seven of these drones, highlighting the escalating threats facing the nation.
In a troubling incident early in the morning, a rocket struck a home in Tira, central Israel, wounding 11 people. The IDF is currently investigating the failure to intercept this rocket.
An IDF attack helicopter was filmed intercepting a Hezbollah drone near Binyamina, south of Haifa. Footage shared on social media captured the dramatic moment.
The rise in drone attacks has become a significant concern. Since the beginning of the year, approximately 1,300 drones have been launched towards Israel from multiple fronts, including Lebanon, Gaza, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, and Iran. Of these, 231 drones struck Israeli territory, sometimes causing casualties and damage. The IDF reports that around 80% of these drones have been intercepted, reflecting both the challenges and the successes in countering this modern threat.
The IDF is intensifying efforts against Hezbollah's aerial force, known as Unit 127, responsible for many of the drone attacks. The military has conducted strikes on numerous sites associated with drone and missile storage, assembly, and deployment, significantly reducing Hezbollah's aerial capabilities. According to IDF assessments, Hezbollah now retains only about 30% of the hundreds of drones it possessed before the conflict escalated.
Since October 8, Hezbollah-led forces have launched near-daily attacks on Israeli communities and military positions along the northern border, claiming solidarity with Gaza amid the ongoing war. This has led to the evacuation of approximately 60,000 residents from northern towns bordering Lebanon, amidst fears of a large-scale attack similar to the one executed by Hamas on October 7.
Since October 2023, attacks on northern Israel have led to the deaths of 39 civilians. Additionally, 61 IDF soldiers and reservists have fallen during cross-border skirmishes and the ground operations launched in southern Lebanon in late September. Two soldiers were also killed in a drone attack from Iraq, and several attacks from Syria have occurred without causing injuries.
However, the IDF estimates that more than 2,000 Hezbollah terrorists have been killed during the ongoing offensive, with nearly 3,000 members of the group lost since the conflict began. Around 100 members of other armed groups and hundreds of civilians have also been reported killed in Lebanon. While Hezbollah has acknowledged the loss of 516 members, these figures have not been consistently updated since Israel initiated a ground incursion at the end of September.
