Israel’s Foreign Minister, Gideon Sa’ar, expressed his congratulations and optimism for Lebanon following the election of Joseph Aoun as the country’s new president. In a statement on Thursday, Sa’ar welcomed Aoun’s election, which marks the end of a prolonged political crisis in Lebanon. He emphasized his hopes that this election would pave the way for greater stability, a brighter future for Lebanon and its people, and improved relations between neighboring countries.

“I congratulate Lebanon on electing a new president after a prolonged political crisis,” Sa’ar stated. “I hope that the election will contribute to strengthening stability, a better future for Lebanon and its residents, and good neighborliness,” he added on X.

Aoun, who was previously the commander of Lebanon’s army, was elected by Lebanese lawmakers as the country's president on January 9, 2025. In his acceptance speech, Aoun promised to focus on the reconstruction of areas affected by conflict, particularly Lebanon’s southern regions and Beirut’s southern suburbs, which have faced significant destruction. He also highlighted his vision of improving relations with Arab nations and reestablishing ties with Syria.

Though Israel’s government has generally refrained from addressing the election publicly, National Security Advisor Tzachi Hanegbi reportedly advised ministers not to comment on the appointment, stating that the election is an internal Lebanese affair.

The election has garnered positive responses from various international bodies. Iran also congratulated Aoun, expressing its desire to strengthen ties between Lebanon and the Islamic Republic. Similarly, France and the US have voiced their support for Aoun’s leadership, with the US emphasizing his role in Lebanon’s recovery and rebuilding efforts.

As Lebanon embarks on this new phase with Aoun as president, there is hope that his leadership will help steer the country toward a more stable and prosperous future.
