Israel's Defense Minister, Israel Katz, issued a direct and firm warning to Lebanon, emphasizing that if the ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah collapses, Israel will no longer distinguish between the Lebanese state and the terror group. Katz’s statement comes as tensions continue to rise along the northern border, particularly after Hezbollah’s recent attack on Mount Dov.
During a visit to the border, Katz said, "We will work with all our might to enforce all the understandings of the ceasefire agreement, and we show maximum response and zero tolerance." He specifically referenced the recent provocation by Hezbollah and reaffirmed Israel's commitment to responding forcefully. "Yesterday was the first test, [Hezbollah] shooting at Mount Dov. We reacted strongly and this is exactly what we will do," he continued.
The Ceasefire Agreement and Lebanon’s Responsibility
Katz outlined Lebanon's responsibility in ensuring the enforcement of the ceasefire, stating that the Lebanese Army must "keep Hezbollah away beyond the Litani [River]" and dismantle Hezbollah's infrastructure. He warned that if Lebanon fails to act, "there will be no longer be an exemption for the state of Lebanon," and Israel would take stronger measures.
Israel had previously made a distinction between Lebanon’s government and Hezbollah, particularly avoiding strikes on the Lebanese capital, Beirut, and areas like Dahiyeh, a Hezbollah stronghold. However, Katz emphasized that this policy would no longer apply if Hezbollah's actions continue.
Hezbollah’s Impact on Regional Stability
Meanwhile, Hezbollah’s involvement in the Syrian conflict remains a significant factor in regional stability. While Iran-backed Iraqi fighters have crossed into Syria to bolster Assad’s regime, Hezbollah has yet to commit additional forces, despite its strategic role in supporting the Syrian government. The group has been distracted by its ongoing conflict with Israel, particularly along the Lebanese-Israeli border, which has seen near-daily attacks and significant civilian displacement.
The recent escalation in Syria, including rebel advances in Aleppo, has exposed Hezbollah's reduced capacity to assist Assad's forces. Experts believe Hezbollah’s withdrawal from parts of Syria to focus on the Israel front has contributed to the success of anti-Assad rebel forces.
Israel's Stance on Hezbollah and Iranian Influence
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) continue to monitor the situation closely. IDF Spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari emphasized that Israel would not allow Iranian weapons to be smuggled into Lebanon to rearm Hezbollah. “We will make sure that we are not threatened. We are a sovereign country, and we will ensure that Iranian weapons are not smuggled to Hezbollah,” Hagari stated.
Israel’s military actions to prevent Hezbollah from acquiring weapons include intercepting flights suspected of carrying arms.
