In a significant move to enhance bilateral ties, newly appointed Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz welcomed Argentina's Defense Minister Dr. Luis Alfonso Petri for an official visit. The aim of the visit, announced on Monday by Israel's Defense Ministry, is to deepen the strategic partnership between the two nations, with a focus on defense and security.
During the visit, Katz highlighted Argentina's consistent support for Israel, particularly during the Israel-Hamas War. He proposed a multi-year program to further strengthen relations, including strategic workshops and seminars covering areas of mutual interest.
In addition to discussions with Katz, Dr. Petri engaged in talks with Maj. Gen. (Res.) Eyal Zamir, Director General of Israel’s Defense Ministry, focusing on regional security concerns, especially the growing influence of Iran in both the Middle East and Latin America. The importance of sustained cooperation between Israel and Argentina in promoting regional stability was a key theme in their discussions.
Dr. Petri also conveyed a message from Argentine President Dr. Javier Milei, reaffirming Argentina’s strong support for Israel’s right to defend itself. He described Israel’s ongoing struggle as a fight not just for the nation but for the free world against terrorism and barbarism.
The visit was coordinated by the Argentine Ambassador to Israel Axel Wahnish and Israeli Ambassador to Argentina Eyal Sela, with talks resulting in agreements to expand defense cooperation. Focus areas included joint projects in cyber defense, drones, border protection, satellite communications, and government-to-government contracts for light arms, munitions, and communications equipment.
This partnership aligns with both countries' shared commitment to addressing global and regional security challenges, strengthening their mutual defense capabilities.
Growing Defense Ties: Israel and Germany Collaborate on Advanced Technology
Simultaneously, the German Navy recently concluded a two-week evaluation of the BlueWhale Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV), developed by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI). The trials, conducted in the Baltic Sea, underscore the growing defense partnership between Israel and Germany. The AUV is designed for complex maritime tasks, including monitoring vital infrastructure and detecting undersea threats.
This evaluation follows other major defense collaborations between Israel and Germany, including the “Arrow” missile defense system. These efforts reflect the countries' strategic alignment in countering mutual security threats, particularly in the face of regional instability caused by Russia's actions in Europe.
The BlueWhale AUV's capabilities, including its advanced sonar systems and autonomy to operate for extended periods, position it as a key asset for protecting critical undersea infrastructure and countering hybrid threats in the Baltic Sea. This collaboration strengthens Germany's defense posture as it modernizes its military in response to NATO’s evolving security concerns and Russia’s increasingly aggressive tactics.
