Turkey's Presidency of Defense Industries (SSB) has unveiled a comprehensive plan to enhance its military capabilities, with the announcement of the deployment of 85 ALTAY main battle tanks (MBTs) by 2028. These tanks will bolster the Turkish Army’s combat effectiveness and demonstrate Turkey’s growing defense industry prowess.
The ALTAY tank is a next-generation MBT designed to significantly enhance the Turkish Armed Forces' combat capabilities with advanced systems such as:
- Firepower: Equipped with an advanced fire control system that includes a 360° panoramic stabilized commander periscope, automatic target tracking, and a laser rangefinder-equipped TV/thermal sighting system.
- Mobility: The tank boasts high-speed maneuverability, capable of reaching speeds of 65 km/h on roads and 45 km/h off-road.
- Protection: The ALTAY features modular armor with passive protection and the AKKOR Active Protection System (APS), ensuring survivability in diverse combat environments.
These sophisticated features make the ALTAY MBT a formidable force on the battlefield, enhancing Turkey’s military readiness and operational effectiveness.
Alongside the ALTAY tanks, Turkey has also signed a contract with BMC to supply 29 ALTUĞ 8×8 wheeled fighting vehicles to the Turkish Land Forces Command. The agreement, finalized on February 24, 2025, is part of the 35mm Turreted Next-Generation Vehicles Project, and includes comprehensive logistical support services to ensure the vehicles’ operational effectiveness.
The ALTUĞ 8×8 will enhance the Turkish Land Forces’ tactical superiority in both conventional and asymmetric warfare environments, making it a vital addition to Turkey's defense strategy.
