As the Gaza conflict continues, the issue of hostages held by Hamas has become a central point of international diplomacy. The United States has urged Turkey to leverage its influence with Hamas to secure the release of hostages. According to US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller, the US would welcome any country, including Turkey, playing a positive role in facilitating the release of captives.
While Turkey has shown diplomatic engagement with Hamas, having met with top officials recently, the US has cautioned against hosting Hamas leadership, stressing that such actions undermine efforts for peace. US officials have made it clear that there can be no "business as usual" with Hamas and that the US expects Turkey to act in a way that supports the resolution of the hostage crisis.
The United States has been working with Qatar and Egypt in mediation efforts but has expressed frustration with Hamas’s stance on the negotiations. While Hamas has insisted that Israel must withdraw from Gaza and end the war before considering any deal, Israel has pushed for a phased approach, aiming to trade war pauses for hostage releases.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel has been firm in his commitment to securing the return of all hostages. During a visit to the Gaza Nitzarim Corridor, Netanyahu issued a stark warning to the captors: "Whoever dares to harm our hostages – their blood is on your head. We will pursue you and find you." He also offered financial rewards to those who assist in the release of the hostages, with a reward of $5 million for each hostage returned.
