In a decisive military move, the U.S. military launched a series of airstrikes against Islamic State (ISIS) targets in Syria, using a variety of aircraft including B-52H Stratofortress bombers, F-15E Strike Eagles, and A-10 Thunderbolt II attack planes. The air campaign, carried out on December 8, was a direct response to the evolving situation in Syria following the fall of President Bashar al-Assad’s regime.

The strikes targeted pre-identified ISIS objectives, focusing on training camps and strategic infrastructure in Syria’s central desert regions. The B-52H Stratofortress, a long-standing asset in the U.S. military, played a central role in these operations, delivering precision strikes aimed at ISIS fighters and leadership. This marked the first time in years that such a combination of aircraft was used in a single air campaign, showcasing the U.S. military's capability to adapt to evolving battlefield requirements.

According to a U.S. official, the airstrikes were successful in targeting significant ISIS fighters and leaders, with no civilian casualties reported. The Pentagon, supported by U.S. Central Command, continues to assess the overall impact of the operations. These airstrikes occur in a volatile context, with Syria grappling with instability after Assad's regime crumbled and Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, a militant group, took over Damascus.

The U.S. military emphasized its commitment to neutralizing ISIS as a global security threat, underscoring that coalition forces will continue efforts to prevent ISIS from exploiting Syria’s instability to regain influence in the region. The recent operations also highlight the enduring relevance of the B-52 Stratofortress in modern military engagements, with the aircraft continuing to fulfill critical roles in direct battlefield attacks.

As the situation in Syria remains fluid, the U.S. and its allies are focused on stabilizing the region and countering emerging threats from ISIS and other militant groups.
