Ukraine has expressed hope that a proposed Knesset bill allowing Israel to transfer Russian-made weapons seized in Lebanon to Ukraine will pass. The bill, introduced by Israel's Deputy Foreign Minister Sharren Haskel, could mark a significant shift in Israel's policy regarding the Russia-Ukraine war. The Ukrainian Ambassador to Israel, Yevgen Korniychuk, hosted Haskel on Tuesday, where he thanked her for proposing the bill and shared hopes for a favorable resolution.

If approved, this bill would allow the transfer of advanced weaponry, including Kornet anti-tank missiles, seized by Israel in southern Lebanon in November 2024. These weapons were found to be of Russian origin, and it is believed that Hezbollah, backed by Iran, possesses similar advanced Russian-made arms. Israeli officials are concerned that these weapons are enhancing Hezbollah’s capabilities and strengthening ties between Russia and Iranian-backed terrorist groups in the region.

Although the bill is a private proposal by Haskel, Israeli officials have emphasized that it does not reflect an official policy change. The transfer of arms to Ukraine would likely strain diplomatic relations between Israel and Russia, which has maintained a neutral stance on Israel’s security concerns. However, the discussion of military cooperation between Israel and Ukraine is growing in light of shared security threats, particularly from Iran and Russia.

The seizure of modern weapons from Hezbollah, including Kornet anti-tank missiles, demonstrates Russia’s ongoing influence in the region. As Israel works to counter threats from Hezbollah and other groups, the transfer of these weapons to Ukraine could support Kyiv’s defense efforts against Russian aggression.

The proposed bill is part of a broader dialogue between Israel and Ukraine about the future of military cooperation, with a shared interest in countering Russian influence in both Eastern Europe and the Middle East.
