In a momentous celebration held on Thursday at the President's Residence in Jerusalem, the Weizmann Institute of Science marked 90 years of groundbreaking research and achievement, alongside the official launch of its new medical school. The event, which drew a distinguished crowd, was hosted by President Isaac Herzog and First Lady Michal Herzog, and included prominent figures from both Israel and abroad.
Among the attendees were trustees of the Miriam and Aaron Gutwirth Foundation, after whom the new medical school will be named.
President Herzog, in his address, reflected on his long-standing personal and familial connection to the Weizmann Institute, which he praised for its global reputation in scientific research and innovation. He lauded the creation of the new medical school as a significant step forward, emphasizing its potential to train future doctors and researchers who would contribute to advancing healthcare standards in Israel and beyond.
“Through this new medical school, we are laying the foundation for future leaders in medicine, whose work will improve lives not just in Israel, but across the globe,” President Herzog said.
A Historic Donation and Vision for the Future
Benjamin Zucker, a trustee of the Miriam and Aaron Gutwirth Foundation, delivered remarks on behalf of the Allied Group, which made a remarkable contribution of over 400 million shekels to fund the creation of the medical school. Zucker described Allied Group not just as a leading Israeli business conglomerate, but as a “Zionist enterprise” dedicated to philanthropy and strengthening Israeli society.
“The Miriam and Aaron Gutwirth School of Medicine will foster groundbreaking advancements in medicine of the highest quality,” Zucker said. “Our graduates will not only be doctors but will also be researchers equipped with access to the extensive resources of the Weizmann Institute. Our mission is to significantly improve healthcare through clinical practice and innovative research.”
“The Weizmann Institute, along with its new medical school, symbolizes resilience and the pursuit of knowledge," he added. "This initiative strengthens Israel’s role as a global leader in research and science, working for the benefit of all of humanity.”
