The World Medical Association (WMA) has called on the International Federation of Medical Students Associations (IFMSA) to immediately reverse its suspension of the Federation of Israeli Medical Students (FIMS), citing concerns over the lack of evidence and due process behind the decision. The suspension, which occurred in August, was based on allegations of harassment, including claims of threats against medical students and hate speech.

The WMA expressed that the suspension, which was passed during IFMSA’s General Assembly meeting in Finland, was unjustified due to insufficient evidence. “In the absence of clear evidence and due process, the suspension of FIMS from the IFMSA remains unjustified,” the WMA said, urging the readmission of FIMS without prejudice.

While IFMSA issued a statement on November 24 stating it would review its suspension procedures, it did not acknowledge that the suspension process may have been improper. Additionally, IFMSA did not provide a timeline for FIMS' potential reinstatement.

The Suspension of FIMS

FIMS, which represents Israeli medical students, was suspended after IFMSA’s National Member Organizations (NMOs) alleged violations of the organization’s constitution and bylaws. These allegations included online harassment and threats, leading to a vote for suspension, which passed with a two-thirds majority.

However, FIMS president Miri Shvimmer argued that the vote process itself was flawed. She claimed that IFMSA had not allowed FIMS time to prepare a response, shut down a livestream of the proceedings, and muted some voters. Furthermore, rumors were circulated suggesting that FIMS members were Mossad agents.

The harassment allegations surfaced following FIMS' condemnation of a social media post by an IFMSA official expressing support for the October 7 massacre. FIMS had also sought to criticize the IFMSA’s one-sided stance on the war between Israel and Hamas.

In response, IFMSA issued a statement of solidarity with those affected by Israel’s war with Hamas but faced criticism from FIMS for focusing solely on Israeli actions in Gaza. This divide contributed to the tense atmosphere and the eventual suspension of FIMS.

The Political Context and Reactions

The suspension has sparked condemnation from the World Union of Jewish Students (WUJS), which described the decision as politically motivated. WUJS argued that the suspension represents a dangerous trend of discrimination against Israeli and Jewish students, warning that such actions could set a precedent for further exclusion of Israeli professionals in other fields.

IFMSA has acknowledged the need for clearer procedural guidelines, emphasizing that urgent and sensitive decisions require swift action, but it also expressed the need to balance expedient responses with procedural thoroughness in the future.
