The Allenby Bridge Crossing between Israel and Jordan reopened for pedestrian traffic late Monday morning, a day after three Israeli civilians were murdered by a Jordanian truck driver who opened fire on them shortly after arriving at the Crossing. There is still no vehicular traffic through the Crossing while security assessments continue.

The murders of Yohanan Shchori, 61, Yuri Birnbaum, 65, and Adrian Marcelo Podzamczer, were committed by a 39-year old Jordanian national named Maher Dhiab Hussein al-Jazi, from the southern Jordan town of Udhruh, east of Petra. He was neutralized by Israeli security forces on the scene, but not before he got several shots off from a handgun he'd managed to smuggle past the security checks.

The Jordanian Foreign Ministry took 14 hours to issue a bland condemnation of the murders and in the meantime, there were celebrations in the streets of Jordan's capital city of Amman. Videos of the celebrations posted on social media show Israeli flags being burned and fireworks being set off.

Despite this demonstration of popular support, the Jordanian security forces say they believe al-Jazi acted alone. For their part, Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad issued statements welcoming the attack but declining to take responsibility for it or claiming al-Jazi as one of their own.
