Elbit Systems, a leading Israeli defense contractor, has announced a significant collaboration with Lufthansa Technik to enhance the security of the German government's Airbus A350 aircraft. The partnership will see Elbit Systems' advanced J-MUSIC™ Directed Infrared Countermeasures (DIRCM) self-protection systems installed on the A350, marking the first deployment of this cutting-edge technology on the aircraft model.

The contract, set to be executed over five years, aims to improve the aircraft’s defense capabilities against potential threats, especially in light of rising global instability and the use of advanced weaponry such as surface-to-air missiles. The DIRCM system is designed to protect aircraft from such missile threats, boosting the safety of personnel onboard, including government officials and key personnel.

Wolfgang Bauer, CEO of Elbit Systems Deutschland, expressed pride in the collaboration, stating, “We are proud to be working with Lufthansa Technik on this important project and look forward to further strengthening the impact and trust in our solutions.”

A Step Forward in Aircraft Protection

As international threats continue to evolve, more countries are turning to advanced self-protection systems to safeguard their air fleets. Elbit Systems' DIRCM technology has gained recognition globally for its reliability and effectiveness in defending aircraft against surface-to-air missiles. Oren Sabag, General Manager of Elbit Systems ISTAR & EW, highlighted the increasing global demand for such solutions, emphasizing the importance of enhancing the security of aviation platforms worldwide.

The DIRCM system has already been deployed on various military and commercial platforms globally, underscoring its proven track record as a market leader in the field of self-protection systems for aviation.

The German government’s decision to equip its Airbus A350 with DIRCM technology reflects the growing concern over potential security threats, particularly from non-state actors using man-portable air defense systems (MANPADS). Michael von Puttkamer, Vice President of Special Aircraft Services at Lufthansa Technik, noted that the increasing use of such weapons presents a concrete threat to global aviation, particularly for high-profile flights carrying political and parliamentary leaders.

“The security situation demands that Germany ensures the protection of its own leadership. We are therefore proud of this lighthouse project with Elbit Systems and Airbus and look forward to contributing our expertise,” said von Puttkamer.

As this significant partnership unfolds, the installation of the DIRCM system on the Airbus A350 will serve as a beacon for future advancements in aviation security. With more nations and organizations recognizing the need for enhanced protection, Elbit Systems continues to lead the way in providing innovative and reliable solutions to safeguard lives and assets in increasingly volatile environments.
