Germany Dragging Its Feet on Arms Shipments to Israel

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and other officials in Berlin have made several statements of support for Israel's battle against terrorism over the past year. But at the same time, export licenses for German manufactured weapons and ammunition, badly needed for the IDF to carry on that battle, have been slow in coming.
The export licenses are granted by the German Federal Security Council, which is chaired by Scholz.
"Ultimately, the growing concerns [against Israel] are the reason why fewer approvals are being granted, even if no one wants to say it out loud," summarized an employee of a representative on the Federal Security Council, in an anonymous comment on the story for the Profil Magazine news portal.
Other details in the report included statistics showing that approvals of export licenses for German manufactured defense equipment had stopped last March, while approvals for arms exports to Qatar, a strong supporter of Hamas, have continued.
Another report this week by the Israeli media outlet Shomrim said that "Often, there are no approvals at all – or they take forever to be processed...export volumes have dropped significantly compared to last year – from 326 million euros to 14.5 million (as of August 21, 2024)."
Germany is one of the world's largest manufacturers and exporters of military equipment and the IDF uses many of its products, some of which have been subsidized by the German government as a form of reparations for the Holocaust.
