Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant held a phone conversation with his American counterpart, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, on Monday, to discuss the situation on Israel's northern border. Gallant is reported to have said during the call that there is a shrinking possibility of a diplomatic solution to the ongoing conflict with Hezbollah, since it insists on standing in solidarity with Hamas.
Gallant added that Israel has a "clear" responsibility to the residents of its northern communities to allow them to return to their homes and their lives, and to do that, the threat of Hezbollah attacks must be eliminated.
The two also discussed other regional threats and issues.
In a related story, the IDF announced on Monday that 97 civilian emergency standby squads in the North have been equipped with weapons, uniforms, medical equipment and other essential gear.
An effort to equip standby squads in Golan Heights communities is ongoing and is expected to be completed soon, bringing the number of equipped squads in the north to 120.
These squads are designed to provide organized defense to communities under attack until IDF combat troops can arrive.
