A classified discussion held at IDF Southern Command has revealed that out of the estimated 17,000 terrorists killed since the war began, the identities of 10,000 have been definitively confirmed. These include terrorists who infiltrated Israel on October 7th, as well as members of Hamas and Islamic Jihad.
The ability to verify the identities of such a large number of militants is seen as a significant accomplishment by the IDF, given the challenges involved in identifying individuals during wartime, especially after airstrikes and intense combat operations. Terrorist organizations like Hamas often go to great lengths to conceal the identities and activities of their operatives.
The meeting, which took place 11 months after the war began, was convened to assess the level of damage inflicted on Gaza’s terror organizations. Before the war, Hamas had an estimated 30,000 fighters, with thousands more aligned with Islamic Jihad. The IDF has confirmed that at least 17,000 of these militants have been killed, though the actual number may be higher.
One key takeaway from the meeting is the significant impact on Hamas’ fighting capacity, but there are still many remaining challenges ahead in eradicating the threat posed by terrorist groups in Gaza.
Additionally, an internal IDF investigation revealed that at least three UNRWA employees killed in an IDF strike were confirmed to be active terrorists. This continues to highlight the deep-rooted infiltration of terrorist operatives within civilian and international institutions in Gaza.
While tactical successes are being achieved, senior officers expressed concern that continued tactical operations alone may not bring the war to a decisive conclusion. The IDF remains focused on dismantling terror infrastructure, but much work remains to be done to ensure long-term security in the region.
