The IDF (Israel Defense Forces) continues its strategic operations in southern Syria, with Brigade 474 of Division 210 carrying out numerous attacks deep into Syrian territory beyond Israel's buffer zone. This has involved seizing weapons and military equipment left behind by the Syrian army. Recently, the IDF released footage showing paratroopers recovering guns, ammunition, missiles, improvised explosives, and even tanks.

The IDF claims that these operations not only secure Israeli territory but also enhance security for the residents of the Golan Heights. These actions come amid ongoing tensions in southern Syria, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insisting on the demilitarization of southern Syria, particularly in the provinces of Quneitra, Daraa, and Sweida. Netanyahu has made it clear that Israel will not allow the presence of forces such as Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) or any groups associated with Syria's new regime.

The need for these operations became even more pressing after HTS seized control of Damascus in December 2024, effectively ending Assad's rule. In response, Netanyahu ordered the creation of a buffer zone, which Israel intends to maintain for as long as necessary, possibly until the end of 2025 or even longer, depending on developments in the region.

Israel’s Foreign Minister, Gideon Sa'ar, also emphasized the increasing threat from groups like Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) operating within Syria, aiming to open another front against Israel. He also criticized the new Syrian government under President Ahmed al-Sharaa, calling it a "Jihadist Islamist terror group" that continues to engage in internal repression and violence.

Amid these developments, Netanyahu's statements advocating for the protection of the Druze community in southern Syria have sparked significant debate both within Israel and internationally. His call for demilitarization and a commitment to Druze security has provoked both support and concern over potential foreign interference in Syria’s internal affairs.
