India’s External Affairs Minister, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, emphasized the robust security relationship between India and Israel, particularly in defense and technology sectors, during a recent statement in the Indian Parliament. Jaishankar reaffirmed that India's decisions on exports, especially those with potential military implications, are made based on national interest and strategic alliances.
"Israel is a country with which we have a strong record of cooperation in national security," Jaishankar stated, highlighting Israel's support for India during times of regional security threats. He also stressed that India’s export control processes align with international regimes, such as the Wassenaar Arrangement, while prioritizing national and strategic goals.
India's partnership with Israel has flourished over decades, covering missile defense, cyber security, and advanced technologies. The two countries share a deep commitment to enhancing their defense cooperation while navigating complex global dynamics.
Jaishankar's remarks also underline India's strategic approach in balancing its international commitments and national interests. Despite global geopolitical challenges, India continues to strengthen its defense ties with Israel, reinforcing its position as a key ally in the region.
A Flourishing Partnership
Since formalizing diplomatic ties in 1992, India and Israel have deepened their cooperation beyond defense into sectors such as agriculture, technology, and innovation. Israel’s role as a steadfast partner has been crucial, especially during moments of tension in the region.
Israel's Economy Minister, Nir Barkat, also highlighted the growing importance of this relationship during the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Partnership Summit in Delhi. Barkat emphasized Israel’s capabilities in cyber security, desert technology, and climate change solutions—fields that align with India’s strategic priorities. He praised India for its strong support, particularly following the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel, which he described as one of the worst atrocities since the Holocaust.
The partnership between the two nations is expected to continue growing, with both countries committed to scaling their economic and technological cooperation in the coming years.
