Israel's Shin Bet internal security agency announced on Thursday that it has uncovered a plot by Iranian agents to assassinate Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and Shin Bet Director Ronen Bar, as well as possibly other senior Israeli officials past and present. This plot was meant, partially, to retaliate for the assassination of Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, which Iran and much of the rest of the world blames on Israel, although Israel has not confirmed or denied it was involved.
Details of the foiled plot include the arrest of an Israeli citizen who has lived in Turkey for many years and had business contacts with Iranian individuals who had connections to the Ayatollah regime. These individuals, with the assistance of Turkish citizens who the alleged assassin also had business ties to, attempted to bribe this businessman into assassinating the officials.
The businessman travelled to Iran at least twice to meet with officials to receive instructions and money. He was indicted on Thursday, and his lawyer said he had simply made an error in judgement. The Shin Bet also said that he had not gone very far in pursuit of any of the objectives that his Iranian handlers had given him to do.
However, they also said that this was only one of several lines of effort Iranian intelligence is using to try to harm Israelis. Earlier this week, the Shin Bet announced that it had broken up an attempt by Hezbollah to assassinate former defense minister Moshe Yaalon.
