Lufthansa and Air France, two of the largest airlines in Europe, announced on Tuesday that they are suspending flights to Tel Aviv, Tehran and Beirut for a few days following an uptick in regional tensions.

“Due to the recent change in the security situation, the Lufthansa Group airlines have decided to suspend all connections to and from Tel Aviv (TLV) and Tehran (IKA) with immediate effect,” Lufthansa said in a statement. “During this period, the Israeli and Iranian airspace will also be bypassed by all Lufthansa Group Airlines.”

The suspension is expected to last through Thursday and Lufthansa said it will reasses the situation and consider its options going forward.

Lufthansa had already suspended flights to and from Beirut until mid-October.

“Due to the security situation at the destinations, Air France is suspending its connections from Paris-Charles de Gaulle and Beirut (Lebanon) and… Tel Aviv (Israel) until September 19, 2024 inclusive,” the French company said in statement sent to AFP. This airline also added that it will “evaluate daily the situation” in the region, because “the safety of our customers and crews is the absolute priority.”

According to the IDF statement, several other key Hamas officials, including Sameh al-Siraj, who held the security portfolio on Hamas's political bureau and Labor Committee, and Sami Oudeh, the commander of Hamas's General Security Mechanism, were also eliminated in the same airstrike almost three months ago. Hamas had refrained from confirming their deaths because they didn't want their surviving fighters to suffer a hit to their morale.

In related news, the US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said on Tuesday that Hamas has refused to participate in negotiations for a hostage release-ceasefire deal for the past several weeks.

"Hamas has been unwilling to come to the table to engage the past several weeks," Miller said. "So yes, it’s true that we have not been able to advance these ceasefire talks, but it’s not because of any lack of effort by the United States or our partners in the region. It’s because the terrorist organization that Iran has sponsored for years and years and years has refused to come to the table."

On the second day of the IDF's ground incursion into southern Lebanon Wednesday, the IDF reported that 8 soldiers had been killed in action and several others wounded. This included at least three separate incidents where soldiers had engaged in battles with Hezbollah terrorists in the midst of sweeping operations which saw large stocks of rockets and other weapons captured or destroyed and dozens of terrorists eliminated.

The IDF soldiers killed in action on Wednesday were named as Capt. Eitan Oster (22), from Modi'in, Capt. Harel Etinger (23), from Eli, Capt. Itai Ariel Giat (23), from Shoham, Sgt.-Maj. Noam Barzilay (22), from Kokhav Ya'ir, Sgt.-Maj. Or Mantzur (21), from Beit Aryeh, Sgt.-Maj. Nazar Itkin (21), from Kiryat Ata, St.-Sgt. Almken Terefe (21), from Jerusalem and St.-Sgt. Ido Broyer (21), from Ness Ziona.

Meanwhile, the Israeli Air Force aircraft reported that they had struck Hezbollah's Intelligence Headquarters in Beirut on Thursday. A great deal of damage was done to Hezbollah's war-fighting capacity by these strikes, according to an after-action assessment.

Finally, the Lebanese National Army reportedly fired at IDF troops after two of their soldiers were hit by Israeli fire.

Ratings agency S&P Global made an unscheduled adjustment to Israel's credit rating on Tuesday, dropping it from A+ to A, saying this was prompted by a "significant increase of geopolitical and security risks around Israel." They also maintained a negative outlook on Israel, meaning the credit rating is expected to be lowered again the next time there is a scheduled adjustment.

The downgrade "reflects the fallout on Israel's economy and public finances from a worsening conflict with Hezbollah in Lebanon, including possible security threats in case of retaliatory rocket attacks against Israel," the agency explained.

It also issued an adjusted prediction for Israel's economic growth in 2024 and 2025, lowering both assessments considerably. At the same time, it increased its prediction of Israel's fiscal deficit for 2024.

The negative outlook maintained by the agency "reflects the risks to Israel's growth, public finances, and balance of payments from the intensifying conflict against Hezbollah in Lebanon, including direct security threats in case of retaliatory rocket attacks against Israel," the report added.

However, it also had some positive notes, including the fact that "Israel has historically enjoyed strong growth rates and has rebounded briskly from previous crisis."

"As we stand strongly against our enemies, we must act to create maximum certainty to the market and investors in the country and around the world, and work to approve a budget for 2025 as soon as possible," Israel's Accountant-General Yali Rothenberg said in response to the news.

The IDF was not taking a break from the battle against the Iranian-backed Lebanese terrorist group Hezbollah on Wednesday morning, despite the Iranian ballistic missile attack the previous evening. The Israeli Air Force carried out targeted strikes on Hezbollah weapons factories in Beirut in recent days and continued with the ground campaign in southern Lebanon meant to push Hezbollah forces north of the Litani River.

Meanwhile, the IDF announced that the 36th Division has been fully mobilized and will soon be sent into action to initiate "limited, localized, targeted raids on Hezbollah terror targets and terrorist infrastructure in southern Lebanon."

The IDF announcement added that the air force and artillery units will be supporting this ground maneuver. The IDF has reported that progress is being made in the effort to destroy Hezbollah's ability to threaten Israel and push it back beyond the Litani River.

A terrorist shooting attack on the light rail in Jaffa occurred on Tuesday evening shortly before the Iranian ballistic missile attack, leading to speculation that the two events might have been related. In any case, the attack in Jaffa left nine people dead, including the two terrorists and seven victims. Several other people, including a child, were wounded, some seriously.

Names of Five of the Victims From Jaffa Shooting Attack Released

On Wednesday morning, the names of five of the victims were released.

They were, 42-year-old Ilya Nozadze, 24-year-old Revital Bronstein, 33-year-old Inbar Segev Vigdar, 40-year-old Nadia Sokolenko and 30-year-old Shahar Goldman.

Police are investigating the incident as a terrorist attack possibly linked to Iran. Other attempted terrorist attacks have been reported at Israeli diplomatic missions and Jewish community centers around the world in the last 24 hours.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave a statement at a meeting of his security cabinet Tuesday evening shortly after the Iranian missile attack which saw almost 200 ballistic missiles fired at Israel. Although most of the missiles were intercepted and damage was light and there were few casualties, Netanyahu vowed that Iran would pay a heavy price for its attempt to damage the Jewish State.

Israeli Leaders Promise Retaliation for Iranian Missile Attack

“Iran made a big mistake tonight - and it will pay for it," he said. "The regime in Tehran does not understand our determination to defend ourselves and to exact a price from our enemies."

“We are fighting the axis of evil everywhere, including our heroic soldiers who are now operating in southern Lebanon and Gaza,” Netanyahu stated. "Today, more than ever, the forces of light in the world must unite and work together against the ayatollahs' dark regime, which is the source of terror and evil in our region. They must stand alongside Israel. The choice has never been more clear, between tyranny and freedom.”

US officials including National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan issued a statement of support for Israel and reinforcing the message that Iran would pay a severe price. At the behest of the US State Department, many governments around the world condemned Iran for the attack, but most also called for a cease-fire and cautioned against Israeli retaliation.

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei also spoke up, posting on X that Iran had the ability to launch many more attacks and each one “will become stronger and more painful on the worn and rotting body of the Zionist regime.”

Meanwhile, government officials and other interested parties all over the Middle East and the world made statements to the effect that they hope these rhetorical battles will not be translated into concrete action. But there is every indication that they will, and preparations are being made accordingly.

The IDF announced on Monday evening that it had begun "limited, localized, and targeted ground raids based on precise intelligence against Hezbollah terrorist targets and infrastructure in southern Lebanon," as part of "a methodical plan set out by the General Staff and the Northern Command, which soldiers have trained and prepared for in recent months."

IDF Crosses the Border Into Lebanon

The IDF formations were led by Division 98, which has gained tremendous experience fighting in Gaza over the past year. That famously included the defeat of Hamas' Khan Yunis Brigade, arguably its toughest unit, in a drawn out series of battles from December 2023 to March 2024.

Just before crossing the border, a senior officer gave the soldiers a pep talk, telling them that "We have a great honor to write history in the North just like we did in Gaza. We started with lower-grade operations, but today, we are starting a more substantial invasion in order to return the northern residents to their homes."

IDF Spokesperson in Arabic, Avichay Adraee, also warned residents of Beirut suburbs to evacuate on Monday night as there were air strikes planned on Hezbollah positions there.

US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller told journalists at a press conference on Monday,"This is what they have informed us that they are currently conducting, which are limited operations targeting Hezbollah infrastructure near the border."

Monday evening around 8:39 PM, the IDF announced that the border communities of Metulla, Misgav Am, and Kfar Giladi were closed military zones.

Around 9:00 PM, the Lebanese National Army began moving back away from the border in an apparent attempt to avoid confronting the IDF forces as they moved across the border.

Shortly thereafter, reports emerged of increased tank and artillery fire by IDF forces at Hezbollah positions inside Lebanon, tracking with reports that earlier in the evening the security cabinet had approved a plan to remove the infrastructure of the Hezbollah Radwan Force from the border area. These highly trained Hezbollah troops were reportedly being prepared to cross the border into Israel to carry out October 7th-style attacks on Israeli communities.

Although the IDF is taking no chances and preparing for stiff resistance from Hezbollah ground forces, many senior officers and intelligence officials have expressed surprise that Hezbollah's much-feared rocket forces have fired so few weapons into Israel in the past two weeks since Israel stepped up its own actions against the Iranian-backed group.

IDF actions to decapitate Hezbollah's senior leadership and destroy many of the rockets and launchers that it had ready to fire into Israel appear to have been even more effective than the most optimistic pre-war assessments. Israeli officials are still cautioning that there is a need for humility, but they are also beginning to talk about the progress which has already been made and the hopes that this war will be shorter and less difficult than they feared it might be.

Dozens of rockets were fired into central and northern Israel by Hezbollah on Tuesday morning and into the early afternoon. Most were intercepted or landed in open areas, causing a few fires and light damage as well as lightly wounding two people. The IDF quickly hit the source of the fire and also reported destroying other Hezbollah weapons depots, launchers and other military positions.

Meanwhile, the head of Hezbollah’s media office, Mohammad Afif, issued a statement Tuesday morning in which he denied that Hezbollah forces have engaged with any IDF troops in Lebanon, adding that the rocket fire which targeted Tel Aviv earlier in the day was “only the beginning.”

In related news, the IDF issued a warning Tuesday morning to residents of over 20 villages in southern Lebanon, saying “The IDF does not want to harm you, and for your own safety, you must evacuate your homes immediately. Anyone who is near Hezbollah members, installations and combat equipment is putting their life in danger.”

In an effort to convince Iran that it should not enter the battle between Israel and Hezbollah and to defend Israel, it's own troops in the region and its other regional allies against Iran if deterrence fails, the US military has deployed additional assets to the Middle East. This includes several additional squadrons of Air Force F-15E, F-16, and A-10 warplanes. Additionally, a Marine Amphibious Ready Group with ships, aircraft and 2,200 ground troops will be put on standby to deploy on short notice if needed.

Analysts believe Iran is unlikely to deploy its own ground troops to Lebanon in substantial numbers to assist Hezbollah in its battle with the IDF, but it might fire long-range missiles at Israel again as it did last April. In that case, the F-15 and F-16 aircraft will be highly relevant as these aircraft were a key part of the allied effort to defend Israel against that attack by shooting down many of the incoming weapons.

Some analysts have openly cast doubt on Iran's willingness to even attampt another such salvo since the one in April was such a humiliating failure for them.

Moody's, one of the three big global credit ratings agencies based in New York's financial district, announced on Friday that it was downgrading Israel's credit rating from A2 to Baa1 with a negative outlook, meaning it expected to downgrade it again in the next review. At the beginning of the current war, Moody's credit rating for Israel stood at A2, and this is the second time it has been downgraded.

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who has been severely criticized for his handling of the Israeli economy, gave a laconic response to Moody's downgrade, saying simply that the governing coalition he's part of "will pass a responsible budget with necessary restraint measures" adding "Israel's economy bears the burden of the longest and most expensive war in the country's history. It is a war of existence that we must continue until victory, which will allow us many years of peace, security, and economic growth."

However, Moody's report included a point that Israel's economy will be "more durably weakened by the military conflict than expected earlier," adding that they "no longer expect a swift and strong economic recovery as in previous conflicts."

It also said that "the significant escalation in geopolitical risk also points to diminished quality of Israel's institutions and governance, which have not fully mitigated actions detrimental to the sovereign's credit metrics." 

Israel's credit rating is now lower than at any time since 1995, and it will make it much more difficult and expensive for the government to both acquire new lines of credit and pay the interest on existing debt. These increased expenses are expected to be passed on to Israeli businesses, households and families in the form of higher taxes and a reduction in both the level and quality of public services.

The north of Israel has not been hit nearly as hard with rockets and UAV's as had been feared, and the city of Haifa in particular has barely been hit at all. Reports have also been leaked to the media about IDF Special Forces incursions into southern Lebanon to scout the ground and uncover traps, etc. is seen by some analysts as a signal to the Israeli public to prepare for a large-scale invasion.

The IDF and Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) confirmed on Monday that Fateh Sherif Abu el-Amin, the leader of Hamas operations in Lebanon, had been eliminated in an air strike. He had been in charge of coordinating between Hamas and Hezbollah and recruiting new terrorists to Hamas from the Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon. He lived in a Palestinian refugee camp in the southern city of Tyre and also served as the head of the UNRWA teachers' association in Lebanon.

This makes el-Amin just the latest of Israel's enemies to be eliminated in air strikes in Lebanon, with IDF officials hinting to the media that the campaign is going much better than they expected and a ground invasion might occur sooner than planned.

According to the New York Times report, Khamenei was “deeply shaken” upon hearing the news about Nasrallah's death, as the two were close friends for many years. Khamenei was immediately moved to a secure location, after which he made a fiery speech vowing revenge on Israel.

He also called an emergency meeting of his senior advisers to discuss what to do next. It was at this meeting that sharp differences arose among his advisers, including Saeed Jalili, who thought it wise to hit Israel before it has a chance to start assassinating senior Iranian officials like it's already assassinated so many Hezbollah officials in recent weeks.

However, the more moderate camp, led by President Masoud Pezeshkian, urged caution, saying that this is exactly what Israel wants Iran to do, so it will start a regional war which Iran would be sure to lose, and even if it didn't there would be catastrophic damage to infrastructure critical to Iran's fragile economy.

Folllowing this meeting, Khamenei made a blustery speech, declaring among other things that “All of the forces in the resistance stand by Hezbollah. It will be Hezbollah, at the helm of the resistance forces, that will determine the fate of the region...Lebanon will make the aggressor and the evil enemy regretful."

Other Iranian officials echoed these sentiments, and some analysts speculated that this was an indication that Iran is leaving its allies to fend for themselves.

However, the sources did say that senior members of the IRGC Quds Force are being dispatched to Beirut to assist Hezbollah in the immediate aftermath of the loss of Nasrallah.

Meanwhile, the IDF announced on Sunday morning that it had eliminated another senior Hezbollah commander, Nabil Qaouk, in an airstrike Saturday in the Dahiyeh suburb of Beirut. As the commander of Hezbollah’s “preventive security unit” and a senior member of its executive council, Qaouk would have been a serious candidate to replace Nasrallah, but that's no longer an option.

Also on Sunday, confirmation came from that Ali Karaki, the commander of the Southern Front, had perished alongside Nasrallah in the IDF strike on Friday afternoon.
