Israeli analysts were closely watching events in neighboring Jordan this week as elections there resulted in significant shifts in the 138-seat parliament in Amman. Islamist parties, including the Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated Islamist Action Front picked up seats in the assembly, although factions loyal to the monarchy and tribal elements are poised to continue in the majority.
"The Jordanian people have given us their trust by voting for us. This new phase will increase the party's responsibility towards the nation and our citizens," Wael al Saqqa, head of the IAF, told Reuters.
Although Jordan is still a monarchy with the King holding most of the levers of power, parliament plays a role in managing the economy and other domestic affairs. The rise in popularity of the IAF and other Islamist factions is also an indication of the cultural atmosphere in the country.
