Israel's national water carrier, Mekorot, announced this week that it will invest several hundred million shekels in building infrastructure to supply water to the southern regions of the country, including the vast Negev Desert region and the Gaza envelope. Company officials toured the region this week alongside Energy and National Infrastructure Minister Eli Cohen and Government Companies Minister David Amsalem, telling reporters that the new project will be launched as soon as the regulatory approval process is completed and should be finished by 2030.
The network of pipes, pumping stations, wastewater treatment facilities and rainwater collection infrastructure will span around 30 kilomters in legnth and when completed, it is projected to increase the supply of potable and recycled water to 360-370 million cubic meters annually. This will more than double the amount of water currently supplied to communities in the region.
The plan is part of a larger set of initiatives by the government to encourage agricultural development in Israel.
