Israeli President Herzog Meets with U.S. Judges: Discussing Legal Systems and Security Concerns

On Tuesday, a delegation of 18 federal judges from across the United States met with Israeli President Isaac Herzog as part of an intensive visit to Israel, organized by the World Jewish Congress. The meeting, held at the President's Residence, provided a unique opportunity for the judges to compare the legal systems of Israel and the U.S. while also discussing broader political and security issues.

A Focus on Legal Systems and International Law

As a lawyer by training, President Herzog took a special interest in discussing the differences between American and Israeli legal systems. During the meeting, he briefly touched on Israel’s judicial appointments system and the complexities surrounding the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which he claimed is not particularly friendly toward Israel. Herzog expressed concerns about the lack of trust in the judicial system and emphasized how the situation is becoming increasingly difficult. He also mentioned Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's lament about other democracies not listening to Israel’s voice.

President Herzog's remarks highlighted the delicate balance Israel maintains in protecting democracy within the region and its unique position as the only democracy in the Middle East. He explained how the challenges faced by Israel are not only about security but also about maintaining international relations amid growing tensions.

A Conversation on Hostages and Human Rights

He expressed alarm over the harassment Jewish students often face, calling the situation a “wake-up call.” Herzog emphasized that these incidents are not just a matter for Israel, but also for Jewish communities globally, as they navigate challenges to their identity and safety.

Before wrapping up their visit, the delegation headed to the Israeli Supreme Court, where Herzog advised the American judges to meet with Chief Justice Isaac Amit to gain further insight into Israel's legal system.
