The Iranian-backed Houthi rebel group which controls most of Yemen claimed responsibility on Sunday for a missile that struck central Israel earlier in the day. A spokesman for the group claimed that the attack was made using a "new hypersonic ballistic missile" in a "specific military operation" meant to target the Israeli city of Tel Aviv.
In any event, the missile crashed into the ground in an open area near the city of Lod after being intercepted by the Arrow air defense system.
The failure of this missile to cause any damage or casualties (although a few people were reportedly hurt as they tried to run to a shelter) did not stop the Houthi spokesman from claiming success. He said that the missile "crossed a distance of 2,040 km in 11 and a half minutes and caused a state of fear and panic among the Zionists, as more than two million Zionists headed to shelters for the first time in the history of the Israeli enemy."
"The geographical challenges, the American-British aggression, and the monitoring, espionage, and interception systems will not prevent beloved Yemen from performing its religious, moral, and humanitarian duty in solidarity with the Palestinian people."
He added that Israel should expect more attacks from the Houthis in the next few weeks before what he called the anniversary of "the blessed October 7 operation."
