Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office announced on Thursday that the IDF would initiate a "powerful operation" targeting "terrorist hotspots" in the West Bank after a series of bus bombings rocked Bat Yam. The announcement follows an urgent security meeting held early Friday morning, after the explosions on Thursday evening.
The bombings, which were intended to cause mass casualties, were foiled when explosive devices weighing between four and five kilograms were discovered and detonated prematurely. The devices had been set to explode the following morning, potentially killing hundreds of civilians. The Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) is leading the investigation, with an initial assessment indicating that the operation was carried out by Hamas operatives, with Iranian support.
In response to the escalation, Netanyahu ordered an increase in preventive security measures by Israel Police and Shin Bet to thwart further terrorist attacks. Additionally, the IDF has deployed an extra three battalions to the West Bank to combat growing terrorist activity.
The explosions took place in two locations, approximately 200-300 meters apart, causing significant damage but no injuries. The bombings are being linked to broader Iranian involvement in terror operations, including funding and training for Hamas in the West Bank.
Meanwhile, Transportation Minister Miri Regev, who was abroad in Morocco at the time, instructed officials to halt all buses, trains, and light rail services for safety checks.
