On Sunday, Health Minister Uriel Buso and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich signed the paperwork that would allow a new hospital to be constructed in Beersheba, the largest city in the Negev region of southern Israel. A new hospital is needed in the region to its population is growing and existing facilities are insufficient.
The new hospital, scheduled to open by the end of 2028, is planned to include 600 beds, surgical facilities and a psychiatric ward. It will be administered by Sheba Medical Center and operated by the Meuhedet and Leumit health maintenance organizations.
This new medical campus will give “equal rights to advanced and professional healthcare services to every citizen in Israel, regardless of place of residence, community affiliation, or economic status,” said Buso.
“Residents of the periphery deserve high-level healthcare services,” added Smotrich. “This step will reduce health disparities.”
Currently, the Soroko Medical Center in Beersheba is the only largescale hospital in the region, which has a growing population that is already over 1 million residents.
