The ongoing Israel-Hamas war has led to significant shifts in dating behavior and attitudes among Israeli citizens. According to new data from the popular dating app OkCupid, 72% of Israeli singles are now seeking serious, long-term relationships, marking a change from the pre-war trends where more casual dating was common. The data shows that 76% of women and 70% of men are now focused on commitment and emotional stability in their relationships, likely influenced by the ongoing conflict and its stresses.

As the war continues, many Israelis have returned to the dating scene, recognizing the importance of maintaining personal connections during such turbulent times. However, not all individuals are ready to re-engage. A significant 31% of OkCupid users have completely paused their dating activities, while 6% intend to return only after the war ends. This shift underscores how the war's impact goes beyond physical safety concerns, affecting emotional and social dynamics as well.

In addition to changing relationship priorities, what people are seeking in a partner has also evolved. A striking 50% of respondents expressed a preference for partners who contribute to household chores without being asked, reflecting a heightened appreciation for practical and supportive relationships during such stressful times. This shift emphasizes the need for cooperation and emotional stability amid uncertainty.

Hedi Axelrad, a lecturer and couples counselor, pointed out that the war's extended duration has reduced the pool of available singles, particularly as many men aged 20-40 are involved in reserve duty. Those who remain available have seen meeting spaces shift from public venues like bars and cafes to more private settings such as homes or virtual meetings. This shift mirrors the social distancing era of the COVID-19 pandemic, where deeper and more personal conversations have replaced the casual interactions of the past. Yet, the emotional toll of the war has made it challenging for many to form lasting connections.

Beyond the dating scene, a recent survey by the Abraham Initiatives revealed that Israeli Arabs feel increasingly alienated from Jewish society, with nearly two-thirds of Arab respondents perceiving negative attitudes towards them from the Jewish population. In contrast, Jewish Israelis surveyed showed awareness of this issue, with 73% acknowledging the negative attitudes. The survey also revealed a significant societal gap in perceptions of equal opportunities for Jews and Arabs, particularly in employment, education, and healthcare. Arab citizens highlighted violence, crime, and anti-Arab racism as their most pressing concerns.

Interestingly, the survey also shed light on political opinions, with 56% of Arab respondents supporting the inclusion of Arab parties in the government coalition, while Jewish respondents overwhelmingly opposed such inclusion.

As the war continues, both the dating landscape and societal attitudes in Israel are shifting. The ongoing conflict is reshaping relationship priorities, the pool of available singles, and perceptions of equality in society.
