Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman made a major pledge to boost US-Saudi relations on Thursday, committing $600 billion in trade and investments over the next four years. This significant financial promise came during a phone call with US President Donald Trump, following his return to the White House. The announcement underscores the deepening ties between the two countries and signals a focus on mutual prosperity and security in the region.

The Crown Prince, who has long been the de facto leader of Saudi Arabia, congratulated Trump on his inauguration and emphasized the kingdom’s intention to expand its investments with the US. Although specifics on the source and distribution of the funds were not disclosed, the sum represents more than half of Saudi Arabia's GDP and will likely play a key role in various sectors, including infrastructure, technology, and energy.

During the call, the two leaders discussed the broader Middle East strategy, focusing on regional security, combating terrorism, and economic cooperation. The partnership is set to further strengthen as Trump looks to continue his foreign policy goals, including pushing Saudi Arabia toward normalizing ties with Israel, a priority for his administration.

Trump’s first foreign visit during his first term was to Saudi Arabia, a move that marked the beginning of closer relations between the US and the Gulf nation. Trump recently joked about potentially revisiting Saudi Arabia if they agreed to increase investments, jokingly raising the possibility of an additional $450 billion or more to cover inflation.

While Saudi Arabia has not yet recognized Israel, the possibility of a shift in policy remains. Saudi officials have stated they will not move forward with such recognition unless a Palestinian state is established. However, with the recent Gaza ceasefire and a potential thaw in regional tensions, the door for renewed dialogue is open. In exchange for recognizing Israel, Saudi Arabia seeks a defense pact with the US and support for its civil nuclear ambitions.

The US-Saudi relationship continues to evolve with increasing economic and strategic cooperation, and the appointment of new US Secretary of State Marco Rubio signals a renewed focus on expanding these ties. In his own call with the Crown Prince, Rubio discussed key regional issues, including the threats posed by Iran, and the mutual benefits of furthering the US-Saudi economic partnership, particularly in emerging fields like artificial intelligence.
